1. Members and visitors to the dream must be 16 years of age or older to join or enter The Big Smoke. Visitors are welcome to enter and roleplay in the dream as long as they read and abide by the rules.
2. Members must treat other members and visitors with courtesy and respect in their out-of-character interactions.
3. Out-of-character discussion is restricted to designated OOC areas, and must be confined to brackets or whispers in IC areas.
4. There are no restrictions on the length of roleplay posts - they may range in size from a few words of dialogue to multiple paragraphs of descriptive text. However, it is a good idea to ascertain a player's preference before roleplaying, so that a compromise may be reached if necessary.
5. Members should refrain from inventing items, locations, creatures, or storylines that would dramatically and irrevocably alter the historical continuity without special permission. You may not, for example, invent a doom ray and use it to blow up the Houses of Parliament.
6. Freeform roleplaying is subject to the consent rule, which means that if someone does something that implies your consent, you are free to ignore it and act as if it did not happen. For example, you may not automatically hit someone in freeform combat - conversely, you shouldn't automatically dodge every attempted hit. Additionally, if someone uses magic on your character, and your character does not believe in magic, you are free to act as if that magic has no effect on you.
7. Combat is discouraged in London. Most Londoners do not carry weapons - even the police are armed only with clubs. Starting a fist fight in a rowdy pub or mugging someone in a dark alley is okay, but in most cases, violent behaviour will get you arrested in short order. Characters may be killed only with the consent of their players. However, players should be aware that combat is very dangerous and that serious injuries can and should lead to serious consequences for your character.
8. Special permission is required to play supernatural characters such as vampires or werewolves, famous historical figures such as Queen Victoria or Jack the Ripper, and famous fictional characters such as Sherlock Holmes or Count Dracula.
9. In-character racism, sexism, classism, etc., is acceptable and appropriate in our continuity, but don't go overboard. For example, an Englishman might call a Frenchman a Frog, or refer to an African as a primitive or a savage, but racial slurs and other epithets may be upsetting to players regardless of context, and should not be used. Out-of-character discrimination or harassment of any kind will not be tolerated.
10. Roleplaying rape is forbidden. Graphic descriptions of sex or torture are also forbidden. Players who wish to roleplay in-character sex or torture may do so, but only if all players involved give their consent, and they must "fade to black" and resume the scene after the event is presumed to have taken place.
